Growing up in Central Florida, ceramic artist Landis Carey spent her childhood summers climbing trees and playing in a small scrub forest behind her home. The forest floor was densely shaded as she played in her imaginary worlds. The deep, vibrant, waxy greens of the oaks, palmettos, and small cacti juxtaposed with the sandy soil and ashy browns of fallen pine needles. Sunlight streamed down, and the blue sky was seen from below. The artist was no older than 11 then, but these are the visual memories of her childhood summers. In Scrub Forest, Landis pairs earthy-toned neutral glazes with vibrant green and blue hues on a rich, dark brown clay body. All layered glazes are applied over color-blocked underglazes that add depth. The work comprises 20 ceramic wall surfaces that bring the viewer into her visual memory.
