Landis Carey’s ceramic practice is rooted in functional pottery. With over 20 years of wheel-throwing experience, she pairs balanced, functional vessels with intricate, layered glazes.

Following a rare pancreatic cancer diagnosis and strenuous recovery, the artist’s ceramic practice shifted from production to experimental after she began experiencing color visions during meditations. The giant swaths of brilliant, undulating, rich color and piercing light Landis experiences in meditation drive her color choices and experimentation. Today, the artist layers glazes on various stoneware clay bodies to explore portions of her color visions.

Landis experiments with glaze viscosity, sheen, and texture on the surfaces of her functional forms while attempting to recreate portions of her visions on her hand-built wall plates. She often layers four or five glazes to achieve color variations. Lighter glazes often reach the vessel's surface, where ambient light further showcases their presence.
